Initial Situation

Following a modification of their trencher in the Groupe Marais workshops, the client rented an ST2 TRN trencher for the construction of an ENEDIS connection intended to supply future wind farms and strengthen the network in anticipation of increased demand.

The 4,500-meter-long project involved laying four HTA240² EDR cables in a 0.52-meter-wide trench through a mix of schist, shale, and clayey sand.

However, several issues arose, requiring the intervention of a Groupe Marais mechanic to adjust the backfiller — adjustments that did not fully satisfy the client.

The client therefore customized their own backfiller, adding a beam extension, two backfillers, and longer blades to improve material flow over the screener and facilitate cleaning operations.

The first section of the project was carried out using a bottom-trench installation, with the trencher tracks positioned on either side.

Project details:

  • Installation: 4 x 3 HTA240² EDR cables
  • Trench width: 0.52 mTotal length: 4,500 m
  • Soil type: schist, shale, and clayey sand

Solutions

The machine used was an ST2 double-slider TRN equipped with a 0.52 m cutting wheel.

We proposed a mechanized laying solution with wheel trenching, designed for complex ground conditions, combined with a multi-cable laying system using specially adapted rollers.

Results

  • Daily progress: 400–500 linear meters/day
  • Client team: 5 operators, 2 excavators, drum carrier tractors, one 6x4 truck for logistics, and a Mélacac equipped with a drum carrier
